Eight years prior to the time Shuffle! takes place, both of Rin's parents and Kaede's mother are killed in a car accident. Kaede became traumatized from the incident, losing her will to live. Rin overheard the doctor saying that she needed a reason to keep living. Rin then went to Kaede and told her that on the night of the accident, he was lonely and phoned his parents, asking them to come back. Since his parents and Kaede's mother rode in the same car, he essentially told Kaede that it was his fault that her mother died. This caused Kaede to harbor a deep hatred for Rin. Upon emerging from her stupor, she began to choke him. Since Kaede's father decided to take Rin into their home, Rin constantly had to endure Kaede's hatred of him, including her vengeful acts such as destroying Rin's room and attempting to hurt him.
Later, some time during their junior high years, Kaede found a postcard while rummaging through Rin's possessions after destroying Rin's model ship. The postcard sparked her memory of the night of the accident, and she remembered that the reason her mother (and Rin's parents) came back was because she had a fever, and she had asked her father to call her mother home. This meant that her mother's death was to be blamed on Kaede herself, rather than Rin. Rin rushed in just as she finished reading the postcard, but he was too late to prevent Kaede from remembering everything and feeling deep guilt for her actions.
In order to atone for her actions in the past, Kaede decided to make herself Rin's personal servant by cooking his meals and doing all the work around the house. Rin does not want this, but he is afraid of causing Kaede a relapse by not allowing her to punish herself in this way.
Lycoris, Nerine's twin sister, gave Primula her beloved cat doll when they met, as they were both experimented on by the gods and demons who wished to achieve artificial life. Primula was the third to be tested on and was the only one to have been created completely artificially. After hearing about him from Lycoris, Primula had always wished to meet Rin. Their first meeting occurs in the second episode of the anime. Although Primula finds it difficult to verbally express her emotions, upon meeting Rin, Primula hugs him and continues to hold onto him all the way to Rin's house, prompting Itsuki to make a comment concerning Rin's taste.
Because Primula has no home in the human world, she would later live with Rin and Kaede, as Primula really wants to live with Rin. For a while, the kings and their daughters are somewhat concerned; ultimately, however, Primula ends up staying. The two Kings are shocked to see Primula in the human world, but don't mind Primula living with Rin, as they feel that Rin can help bring out Primula's emotions (which Rin is eventually somewhat successful in accomplishing).
Throughout the series, Primula develops a closer bond with Rin, as well as with Kaede and the other girls. Whenever she sees Rin going on a date with another girl, Primula can tell that it affects Kaede. This problem is explained later on in the series.
Primula's powers are controlled by her emotions. As a result, when she is first introduced in Shuffle!, Primula does not let her emotions show on her face; the first time she smiles is when Rin gives her a new cat doll. When Primula starts to gain better control of her powers/emotions later on, she begins smiling more frequently. Because of all these new emotions, her magic goes out of control for a while, but eventually she is able to contain it once more, thanks to Lycoris' brief reappearance.
At the end, Primula lives with Kaede in the Fuyou household and enrolls in the Verbana Academy with Rin and the others; she basically becomes the narrator for the last part of the season finale. Like all the other girls in the end, Primula still does love Rin. One scene involves Primula giving Rin some special food (herb roll, extra bitter edition) that was drugged, ending up with him falling onto Primula with her rubbing against him and hugging him. A scene in the anime's final ending credits depicts Primula losing a card game against the God and Demon King, prompting her to blow up the room with her magic in retaliation.
