Light Yagami is an extremely intelligent young man who resents what appears to be a relentless increase of crime and corruption in the world around him. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note," lying on the ground. The Death Note's instructions claim that if a human's name is written within it, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the notebook's authenticity, but after experimenting with it, he realizes that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the previous owner of the Death Note, a shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the New World" by passing his keen judgment on those he deems to be evil or who get in his way.
Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira" (キラ?, derived from the typical Japanese pronunciation of the English word "killer"), is located in Japan. He also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a game of psychological cat and mouse between the two begins.
Misa Amane, another Death Note owner, finds Light. Obsessed by Kira after the death of her parents' murderer, she devotes herself to helping Light, but is captured by L. Light makes a plan involving renouncing ownership of both Death Notes, and all of his memories of them, and turns himself in to L for surveillance. Together, Light and L investigate eight people from the company "Yotsuba" who are using Light's Death Note for their own profit. While arresting them, Light recovers all his memories when he touches the Death Note. He remembers and continues his plan of tricking the former owner of Misa's Death Note, the shinigami Rem, into killing L and his aide Watari.
After L's death, Light is given the position of the "new L" by the Japanese Taskforce. Years later, Near and Mello - two children who were raised to be successors to L - appear, with the goal of finding Kira. In the meantime, Kira has gained much public support, and has contacts, Teru Mikami and Kiyomi Takada, continue killing criminals when he is unable to do so himself. Light kills Kiyomi to avoid her implicating him after she uses the note to kill Mello. When Mikami fails to realize his own Note is a fake duplicated by the SPK, it is used by Near to prove Light is Kira in a confrontation between the taskforce and the SPK. Realizing that Light cannot escape, and unwilling to remain attached to him for the duration of a trial and execution/imprisonment, Ryuk writes Light's name in his own Death Note, and Light dies.

The story takes place in a fictional universe where humans live in harmony with gods, resembling humans with slightly pointed ears, and devils, who have more prominently pointed ears. Despite their respective positive and negative connotations, both races are equally kind and good-natured. Ten years prior to the story, the gateway between the worlds of the gods and demons were opened, and since then, people from all races have been immigrating between the worlds. The characters attend the transracial high school, National Verbena Academy (バーベナ学園, Bābena Gakuen?) in Kōyō-chō (光陽町?, lit. Sunshine Town).
Shuffle! contains a leitmotif of allusions to flowers. All of the characters' names are references to flowers in some way, mostly genera of flowering plants. (See individual character articles for their meanings.) Additionally, in Japan, every day has a special flower associated with it, which in turn are associated with certain characteristics. This is called hanakotoba, or "language of flowers". All of the characters' birthdays and personalities correspond with the flowers of their respective days. For example, the high school that the series takes place in, National Verbena Academy, refers to the genus Verbena, which has connotations of cooperatio
The storyline of Shuffle! follows the life of Rin Tsuchimi, a normal seventeen-year-old second-year high school student who finds himself sought after by a variety of girls. Eight years prior to the onset of the story, he lost his parents in a car accident that also took the life of Kaede Fuyou's mother. From that point onwards, he began living with her. At around the same time he lost his parents, he met Lisianthus and Nerine at different times who each were accompanying their fathers on a diplomatic business in the human world. Each girl became lost after wandering through the human world. During that time, Rin befriended each girl after playing with them for a day. As a result of his kindness, Rin finds himself as the potential marriage candidate for both Lisianthus and Nerine, the two daughters of the kings of the god and devil worlds who recently transfer to Rin's school at the onset of the story.

Lead singer of the popular band Nittle Grasper along with Tohma Seguchi and Noriko Ukai, and friend of Shuichi. He left the band three years ago to pursue a solo career in America but returned to Japan to reform Nittle Grasper. Shuichi is excited at the news of Nittle Grasper's reunion, but that now makes Ryuichi his rival. Ryuichi is kind and sometimes seems to have the mind of a five-year-old, until he starts singing; then he becomes a really cool, mature, vocal god. Other characters have noticed that Ryuichi and Shuichi are quite similar in their child-like manner. His best friend is a pink bunny named Kumagoro (Mr. Bear in the English version), which is from K-san, his old manager. It contains a tracking device, and is from the K brand stuffed animal line. Not much is known about his past.
One of Ryuichi's defining features is his personality. For the most part he goes about life in a childlike state, hyper actively and naively. To further define this attitude, he carries around a stuffed pink rabbit named Kumagoro that he regularly talks to as though it were a living person and often plays with it in public. Though this sort of personality charms a lot of people, it also works for a lack of communication when other characters want to talk to him seriously.
There are few instances Ryuichi acts his age, most commonly when he's performing onstage. He'll drop the childlike demeanor and perform seriously. His serious side also emerges whenever he becomes upset or angry enough, which ends up scaring those who know his childlike side more. This side seems to emerge when he wants to make a point, though he acts more like a child when he wants to encourage someone or comfort them.
It has also been debated that Ryuichi shares in the homosexual plot. In the EX version of the manga, he is seen kissing Shuichi, making Eiri highly jealous. Most fans argue that this is only part of Ryuichi's childlike demure or that he's doing it to somehow bring Shuichi and Yuki closer together- perhaps to make Yuki appreciate Shuichi more.
Yet, fans who encourage this act say Ryuichi, does in fact, love Shuichi. In Gravitation there are clues that show how attached he is to Shuichi. In volume 12 of Gravitation he tells Tohma that he loves Shuichi, but he says it in a friendly way. In Gravitation EX, he got serious when his ringtone started playing and therefore acted infatuated with Shuichi. Ryuichi's character changes with his own or Shuichi's music. If he was acting like a child when he kissed Shuichi, it would have been obvious that he was scheming.
However, as the Gravitation Ex storyline moves on, we discover that Ryuichi's kissing Shuichi was recorded by Rage(Reiji) for her movie(which we see the ending scene and credits of, at the beginning of a later track). Therefore, it is somewhat safe to say that all bets are off--Ryuichi's serious side could have been simply acting to fill the dramatic part of causing Shuichi to cheat on Yuki. It could just as easily have been the serious side acting, but using the scene to live out his own desires or obsession with Shuichi. It is quite the complicated matter, as in Track 77 of Gravitation Ex, we also see that Ryuichi has two very distinct (almost akin to DID/MPD, perhaps) personalities, and that he acts differently when the more childish of those personalities has been 'dismissed' from his body by the more serious one.

Two years ago, Ayumu Narumi's older brother Kiyotaka, a famous detective and pianist, disappears without a trace. Ayumu's only clue as to his brother's whereabouts is the phrase "Blade Children," the only words Ayumu could make out in Kiyotaka's final phone call. Now in high school, Ayumu becomes involved in solving in a series of murders and other incidents, all related to the Blade Children. Together with his school's journalist, Hiyono Yuizaki, and the unwilling assistance of his sister-in-law, Madoka, Ayumu tries to figure out who the Blade Children are and what are their goals.
The Blade Children are the central mystery of the series, known only as cursed children that few know about and are being pursued by so-called Hunters. They are distinguished by their cat-like eyes and by missing the seventh right rib bone. As Ayumu investigates them, he meets Blade Children Kousuke Asazuki, Rio Takeuchi, Eyes Rutherford, Ryoko Takamachi, and Kanone Hilbert, and is tested in various ways by them. Those who meet him eventually conclude, some more reluctantly than others, that Ayumu does have what it takes to "save" the Blade Children, as they say Kiyotaka claims.
The anime series, which adapts the story through the sixth volume of the manga, compares the Blade Children to cuckoo birds, having been deposited in human "nests" to be raised, and suggesting that cuckoos go violently crazy toward the end of their lives. The manga continues the story, depicting Ayumu's discoveries about the origin of the Blade Children, their relationship with Kiyotaka, and why his older brother thinks Ayumu might be their savior.

Nerine Forbesii, or Rin, is a character from the visual novel/anime series Shuffle!. She is from the demon world and attends Verbana Academy. She became one of the prime marriage candidates for Rin Tsuchimi, the lead male character in the series. While her cooking skills are poor, her magic capabilities are impressive, with enough destructive power to level entire city blocks. Her grades in school are also excellent.
While Nerine's nickname, Rin, and Rin Tsuchimi's given name are the same, the two are generally differentiated by the honorific titles they are addressed by. Nerine is referred to as Rin-chan, while Tsuchimi is addressed as either Rin-kun, Rin-sama, or Rin-dono. However, Tsuchimi is also called Rin-chan by some, such as Asa, so context is the most important factor.
Nerine is named after the Nerine samiensis, also known as the diamond lily, a species of flower bearing plants of the Nerine genus native to South Africa. In hanakotoba (the Japanese language of flowers), this flower has connotations of "happy memories".
In the normal timeline, Nerine is the daughter of Forbesii and Sage. However, if the alternate timeline is caused in Tick! Tack!, her mother is Ai. The alternate Nerine has reddish hair and an opposite personality to that of the normal Nerine. In both timelines, she is also Cineraria and Eustoma's niece and Lisianthus's cousin.
Lisianthus Eustoma, or Sia for short, is one of the main characters in Navel's Shuffle! media franchise. She is the princess of the god world and came to the human world as a possible marriage candidate for Rin Tsuchimi.
Lisianthus is the only daughter of Eustoma and Cineraria, making her actually half-god, half-devil, but she only inherited the god racial characteristics of her father. Through Cineraria, she is Forbesii's niece and Nerine's cousin. She is also the non-biological daughter of Iris and Liliac, as Eustoma practices polygamy. Despite her fondness for her father, Lisianthus has a habit of hitting him with a folding chair, in a fashion similar to WWE, if he embarrasses her in front of her friends.
Lisianthus is named after the Eustoma russellianum, or Bolero Deep Blue, of what used to be known as the Lisianthus genus. In hanakotoba, (the Japanese language of flowers), this flower has connotations of "hope", "wish", or "aspiration".

First Appearance: Episode 1 (Anime), Chapter 1 (Manga)
Yunoki Azuma was born as the third son to the Yunoki family which gains its prestige from the Business Industry, and because of this, since Azuma was a child, he had been raised and instructed to maintain a good appearance and become a support for his brothers; though it also appears that he should not outshine them in any way, judging from how he was told to quit the piano when he showed progress above one of his brothers and later took up the flute instead.
As he is a student in the Music Department of the school, people would assume that he would continue on to pursue a career in the Music Industry but that is not the case. He’s merely pursuing the musical career until the end of High School and according to his grandmother can only regard it as a ‘hobby’ before he must continue on to study a major in college that would benefit his family’s business and assist his elder brothers.
He excels both musically and academically and is shown to occasionally help out the student committee's works, though it doesn't seem that he's part of the student council itself.
Throughout the story, Yunoki Azuma is shown to have two sides to his personality; a ‘White’ personality that he publicly display to his peers and what we see from the beginning of the series, which is that of a charming, considerate, and ‘princely’ character, and a ‘Black’ personality that he shows to Hino Kahoko and we only see from volume 4 of the manga onwards (He shows his "Black" side to Hino at the end of Episode 11 and the first minute in Episode 12), this personality is similar to that of an antagonist in a way that he is deceiving everyone and picks on Hino whenever they’re alone. It is assumed by Hino that the ‘Black’ personality is his true identity, though after meeting his grandmother and learning about the constraints and burdens he holds towards his family, Hino starts questioning whether if that’s really the case.
